Bugeisha is a quarterly magazine for readers and practitioners of traditional martial arts. In its 10th edition, September 2021, an article authored by Master Toby Cooling and Sensei Dan Popp is included: “Order of Isshin-Ryu – A Martial Arts Family Celebrating its Golden Anniversary.”
The article describes our roots and history, our family values, and the diverse martial arts systems that we teach and practice within our organization.
On our roots and history:
“January 15, 2021 marked 65 years since the founding of the Isshinryu system of karate by Shimabuku Tatsuo. This date was also the 50th anniversary of the Order of Isshin-Ryu (OI), a fraternity of students under the direction of Grandmaster Cooling. This karate family has produced over 200 yudansha in that span of time, of which ten of those members have been honored as inductees into the International Isshinryu Hall of Fame.”
On our family values:
Master Jesus Jimenez of the Puerto Rico dojo states, “How many dojo does the OI have?” “We are one dojo. We have many schools and sensei, yes. But we are the Order of Isshin-Ryu. One dojo.” “The distance between many of these dojo is great; however, the approach has always been that the OI is one dojo under the direction of Grandmaster Cooling.”
On our diverse martial arts systems:
“The OI family includes various forms of martial arts, including Order of Isshin-Ryu Karate, Chi-Ryu Jiujitsu, Chin Na and Kyusho, SMP Arnis, Matayoshi Kobudo, and Groundfighting.” “…all of them with the purpose to complement the techniques, philosophies, and teachings of Master Cooling’s method of Isshin-Ryu.”
